Leaving Sorrento, we drove to Napoli with Mt Vesuvius looming large, to spend some time in the National Archeological Museum of Naples (known as MANN - Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli). We parked MoneyPenny in the underground carpark at the Piazza Garibaldi by the main train station and walked about 20-30 minutes from there to the museum. There is also an underground metro but we wanted to see a bit of Naples so chose to walk.
The MANN contains some of the best finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum. We did some research in advance of visiting the Pompeii ruin (a bucket list moment for both of us tomorrow). A lot of the most beautiful mosaics, paintings and artefacts are actually held at the MANN so it's well worth trying to visit as a complement to the ruins on site. I could hardly believe that the mosaics were actually from Pompeii as they were so detailed, colourful and magnificent! The still-life paintings from the villas and beautiful glassware, silverware, lead-glazed pottery, bronze and marble statues were breathtaking. The scale model of Pompeii - also fabulous!
So we have backtracked a little to spend a couple of nights in Pompeii. MoneyPenny has been losing coolant at an increasingly rapid rate over the past few days. Mr F managed to locate the problem to a leaking radiator hose and had some spare hosing in the boot (of course!) so fixed it in the Piazza Garibaldi carpark this afternoon. :) Happy days!
