The Avignon Festival

I thought this deserved its own post because it is such an amazing event. MoneyPenny was cooling her heels in the Palais de Papes carpark and we spent a couple of amazing nights soaking in the festival atmosphere!

The Avignon Festival is an absolute feast of performing arts, live music and theatre. There is so much to enjoy! There are amazing street performers, there's the formal festival program of lectures, concerts etc and then there's the 'off' festival or fringe activity which is such a lot of fun. People hand out flyers, roving the street, often performing as they go in costume trying to entice you to buy tickets for their show. It was normal to be sitting having lunch or a drink in a cafe and for several live performances to come by to entertain you. There are a lot of small theatres in the town and we went to one show called 'Mahalia et moi' which was a lot of fun.

The heatwave continued with temperatures in the mid-thirties by 10.00am and in the afternoon the sky was covered by smoke from a nearby wildfire. We recommend the Petit Train, the Musee Culvert and the Petit Palais. Many of the museums in Avignon are free thanks to the local municipality. We will be back!!
